ABOUT THE HONORARY CHAIRS
Katherine and Paul Murphy
Katherine and Paul Murphy are members of St. Martin’s Episcopal Church and longtime Houstonians with a combined family of six children, Catherine, Trey and Robert Murphy and Everett, Jack and Alec Easterby. Katherine has felt privileged to serve on several boards over the years and chaired multiple events in Houston with a focus on children, education and the arts. She currently serves on the boards of the Children’s Museum of Houston, the Society for Performing Arts and the Jones Hall Foundation Board. Katherine earned her undergraduate degree from the University of Texas at Austin and her law degree from the University of Houston. She practiced law for nearly fifteen years, the majority of which with AIG American General, before marrying Paul and retiring to spend more time with her family.
Paul Murphy is the Chairman and Chief Executive Officer and a Director of Cadence Bancorporation and Chairman of Cadence Bank, N.A. He has served at Cadence and its predecessors since January 2010. Previously, Paul spent 20 years at Amegy Bank of Texas, helping to steer that institution to assets of $11 billion and 85 banking centers in Texas. During Murphy’s tenure, Amegy completed several successful acquisitions and sold to Zions Bancorporation. Murphy is an advocate of the community and is a board member of the Hope and Healing Center among others. In addition, he serves on the boards of Natural Resource Partners and Oceaneering International, Inc., and is active in the YPO Gold. Paul earned a bachelor’s degree in banking and finance from Mississippi State University and his MBA from the University of Texas at Austin.
ABOUT THE SPEAKER
Ron Powers
Ron Powers is the author of 13 books and the co-author of three. These latter include the New York Times best-selling Flags of Our Fathers, written with James Bradley and published in 2000, and True Compass, written with the late Senator Edward M. Kennedy and published in 2010.
In March 2017 Hachette published No One Cares About Crazy People: The Chaos and Heartbreak of Mental Health in America. In its review, the New York Times wrote: “No doubt if everyone were to read this book, the world would change.” The book was a finalist for the 2018 PEN/E.O. Wilson Prize for Literary Science Writing.
Ron’s other solo books include Mark Twain: A Life, published in 2005 and a finalist for a National Book Critics Circle award, and Tom and Huck Don’t Live Here Anymore: Childhood and Murder in the Heart of America, published in 2001; a finalist for the Los Angeles Times Book Prize and a semifinalist for the Robert F. Kennedy Book Award.
Ron is the winner of the 1973 Pulitzer Prize in Criticism, for work done at the Chicago Sun-Times; and a 1984 Emmy for my commentaries on CBS News Sunday Morning with Charles Kuralt.
Ron lives in Castleton, VT, with his wife, Honoree Fleming, Ph.D. They are the parents of two sons. Kevin, our younger, succumbed to schizophrenia and suicide in 2005, near his 21st birthday. Dean, 32, is a diagnosed schizophrenic and is successfully battling the affliction.
ABOUT THE CHRYSALIS AWARDEE
Houston Methodist
This year, Houston Methodist Hospital will receive the Chrysalis Award in recognition of their steadfast commitment to providing compassionate care for mental health.
Houston Methodist has long been one of the few health care institutions in Houston to provide in-patient psychiatric services. The hospital has recognized and promoted the centrality of mental health to overall health, as evidenced by the depth of services provided—emergency care, consultations for acute care patients, mobile assessment teams and more. Now, at a time when most institutions are cutting behavioral health services due to lack of funds, Houston Methodist is expanding.
On January 15, 2018, Houston Methodist Behavioral Health opened its doors. This innovative, integrated psychiatric clinic provides patients with an unparalleled level of advanced evaluation and care. This includes everything from neurocognitive testing, genetic testing, brain imaging, aqua and physical therapies, minimally invasive neuromodulation technologies, and experimental therapeutics.
By continuing to expand and advance behavioral health care, Houston Methodist is a bold leader in the effort to provide the type of compassionate, state-of-the-art care that our community needs and deserves.
